Linear Resonant Actuator (LRA) for Haptic Feedback Applications

Ireland -- Free-Press-Release.com-- Feb 1, 2012 -- Precision Microdrives has launched a LRA haptic feedback actuator in the form of a 10mm diameter x 3.4mm tall coin vibrating motor form factor. Linear resonant actuator (LRA) haptic actuators are becoming increasingly used for handheld devices to implement vibration alerting and haptic feedback functions. Because they are effectively brushless they have a longer life than traditional ERM pager motors.

Their design for haptic feedback means that they have a very low haptic lag time (just 5ms) which makes for much crisper haptic effects.

LRA motors drives differently to regular vibration motors. Instead of the DC signal used for regular ERM pager motors, LRA motors take an AC drive signal. The drive signal also needs to oscillate at the resonant frequency of the LRA. For the C10-100, it is 175 Hz, as specified on the datasheet.

Precision Microdrives is introducing a line of LRA motors through 2012 with the C10-100 being its first linear motor. It generates a vibration output of 1.4G at 175Hz with a 2v RMS input signal. Current draw is typically less than 70mA RMS and the motor comes with AWG 32 leads whichmodification is available upon request.
