GBI Research’s new report “LNG Industry To 2016 - Increasing Gas Supply Challenges Future Growth Prospects” provides an in-depth analysis of the global LNG industry and highlights the various concerns, shifting trends, and major players in each geographic region.

As the fastest growing economies, with rapidly rising energy demands as a result of a massive population growth rate and limited domestic resources, the China and India together are set to become major LNG importers by 2016. The governments of the two economies are encouraging their respective National Oil Companies (NOCs) to participate in LNG re-gasification projects. China’s demand for natural gas has been increasing and would continue to rise significantly. Hence, China will be looking forward to achieving long-term LNG contracts to secure a sustained LNG supply for its domestic needs.

Global gas production has fallen by about 3.5% in 2009-2010, hitting record lows for several decades, the main reasons being a sharp drop in demand and tougher competition between different types of fuel. Some countries are stepping up liquefied gas production, seeing it as more competitive than gas transit through pipelines from a long-term perspective. Hence, the economic feasibility of natural gas transportation post-liquefaction (as LNG) over piped natural gas transportation would be a decisive factor for the rapid growth of LNG industry in the future.

The relative economy, assured with regards to natural gas usage over liquid fuels as an energy source, would drive the market share of the LNG industry further in the conventional energy markets worldwide. Besides this, shale gas output has been growing rapidly, particularly in the U.S., raising fears that new export pipelines may eventually become unclaimed.

This is so because massive unconventional natural gas reserves would undoubtedly assure indigenous usage, especially in the U.S., one of the major consumers of natural gas, where shale gas discoveries have drastically changed the export-import scenario. Hence, major LNG exporters such as Qatar, Australia and Trinidad and Tobago would continue to have major marketing issues in terms of business development for a long time.
