FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 24, 2012 --
171 million people would be lifted out of poverty if every child received an education (Room to Read).
Businesses and municipalities team up to promote life literacy at a Women’s event in March 2012.
Lamont County Community Adult Learning Council will host the Spring Tune Up Women’s Conference and local author Charmaine Hammond will be speaking on the topic of resilience. “Resilience is an important skill in life literacy,” says Hammond, the Bounce Forward Expert. To support family and community literacy, Dr. Dennis McCartney and Dr. Lani Lafrance of The Fort Saskatchewan Veterinary Clinic have generously sponsored every attendee to receive a copy of Hammond’s bestselling book, On Toby’s Terms. The Town of Lamont, Town of Bruderheim and the Town of Mundare have collaborated to sponsor each attendee at the Lamont County Spring Tune Up Women’s Conference with a copy of Hammond’s book Toby The Pet Therapy Dog and His Hospital Friends.
The Literacy.ca Fact Sheet stated that “Over 10 million Canadians are working at marginal or modest levels of literacy”. ABC Life Literacy states that four out of ten Canadians struggle with literacy which impacts various areas of their life including community, employment, social skills, finances and more.
According to ABC Life Literacy, “It’s the literacy skills you need to live your life and the new skills you need to acquire throughout your life. Workplace, family and community are important areas in your life where developing your reading, writing and math skills can result in a more productive and more successful life experience.”
On January 27, 2012 celebrate Family Literacy Day at home and at work. Here are a few tips to promote literacy:
- Take your children to the local library to sign out books
- Family reading time
- Have children help read recipes when baking cookies or labels on grocery items
- Purchase a magazine subscription for your child (e.g. children’s sports, pet related, hobby related)
- Provide opportunities for children to learn about finances (e.g. grocery shopping)
