Bruce Price, novelist, artist, and poet, decided his literary site needed a makeover. So now there’s a sleek new Lit4u.com.
“The lit-for-you name,” Price explains, “and as well a slogan on the old site, ‘For The People, Not The Professors,’ expresses my literary philosophy. No question, I want to be creative, original, experimental, hip, modern, aesthetic, way-out, all that. But I want my readers to be entertained, to be drawn into the work, not excluded. I’ve always felt an antipathy to art that is gratuitously pretentious and difficult. Unfortunately, that’s what our academic culture tends to favor. Lit4u.com is a protest.”
“The new site,” Price says, “is an anthology, a collection, a Whitman’s Sampler. There are about a dozen categories of work, with a few examples of each, for a total of 50 poems, essays, chapters, etc. Visitors could read every word in an hour or two.”
A combination of motives led to rebuilding the site. Price realized he could save money on the hosting. He was ready for something different. And a lot of big companies are offering sophisticated site-building services at low cost -- he wanted to experiment with the state-of-the-art.
Here are some of the categories that visitors find on the homepage: love poems; death poems; satirical poems; poems for kids; experimental poems; essays on education; essays on poetry; opening chapters from three very different novels; and even pitches for several movie scripts.
“All of this material,” Price insists, “is a lot of fun. I think of myself as part of the great tradition going back to the Greek poets. There you found a meld of story, song, and surprise. Same in Shakespeare. Same wherever you see people being delighted by literature. What a lovely word, huh? Delighted! Perhaps I should confess, I think ‘I’ve never seen a purple cow’ is one of the best things written in English. It’s delightful. I have a great sense of wonder. I want art to amaze and entertain me. And I’m trying to do the same thing to myself. If I can make a painting and react, wow, look what I did, well, that means I was at least a little bit successful. If on the other hand, I feel an artist is being ‘smarty concerning questions arty,” as e.e. cummings delightfully put it, I tend not to be impressed.”
Price writes great deal about education these days (mainly on Improve-Education.org) He put three of his wilder essays on Lit4u.com.
He is especially proud of a long poem called “Theoryland” and that is also on the site. “I persist,” Price laughs, “in maintaining that this is the best long poem in American literature. I’m waiting for somebody to show me what’s better. Even if it’s not the best, it’s still a lot of fun.”
“My goal is entertaining as many people as possible. And maybe some editors will see work they want. Meanwhile, let me mention that I did this site with Jimdo.com; I also tested some others. Frankly, each company has its special features, and as well its flaws. Adventurous poets and artists can create amazing sites if they have the patience. Jimdo’s approach forced me to be more consistent than I am inclined to be, probably a good thing. So I ended up with a more formal site than I had before. This lets the writing do the shouting.”
Here’s the Lit4u.com theme song:
ARS POETICA
Oh, to uncage words
as startling as birds
naked and silken
full of song and shriek
flung into the envious air
on a wonder of wings
to spin and soar and rise
dazzling our days
with surprise
