Little Guy Teardrop Camper to Donate Net Profits of Special Edition Teardrop Camper Trailer to New Faculty Majority: The National Coalition for Adjunct & Contingent Equity (NFM)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 10, 2009 --

An article posted today on the Chronicle of Higher Education website (see http://chronicle.com/article/An-Activist-Adjunct-Shoulders/48348/) features University of Akron part-time professor Matt Williams standing in front of a bright yellow Silver Shadow brand Teardrop Camper Trailer as he prepared to make a recent delivery to North Carolina. Mr. Williams, an assistant lecturer of communication at The University of Akron and a marketing and web consultant and occasional teardrop camper trailer delivery driver has made an increasing number of such trips over the past year in his effort to make ends meet in a fledgling economy.

Most recently, Mr. Williams has returned from a 3,000 mile excursion from Little Guy's headquarters in Canton, Ohio to Kansas City, Missouri to Elkhart, Indiana to Chattanooga, Tennessee and back to Canton. And that was over a single weekend. This trip was relatively short, however, compared to the trip that he made to deliver a Little Guy Teardrop Camper Trailer to a service member returning from deployment in Iraq to his base in Fairbanks, Alaska. Mr. Williams drove from Canton, Ohio to North Pole, Alaska and back this past January. He made this nearly 8,000 mile round trip over the Trans-Canada and Alaskan Highways through some of the harshest driving conditions in North America. According to Mr. Williams, "There were times that I would drive for several hours without seeing another vehicle. I had to carry 25 gallons of extra fuel on the trailer just to get from gas station to gas station: and refueling your car in the middle of the night in temperatures approaching 50 degrees below zero is a real challenge. But that's nothing compared to the feeling of driving through a herd of buffalo standing within several feet of your car. That was a bit scary!"

In his position as a part-time professor at The University of Akron, Mr. Williams is paid the equivalent of $8.65 per hour with no access to health insurance or other benefits. He has recently become active in promoting adjunct & contingent faculty equity and now serves as the vice-president of New Faculty Majority: The National Coalition for Adjunct & Contingent Equity. According to Chris Baum, Little Guy Worldwide's Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President, "Matt has made a real different in how we approach the Internet. He redesigned our website several years ago, and it has made a huge impact on our sales and on public awareness of teardrop camper trailers in general. While he works pretty much full-time at The University of Akron now, we have kept a desk open for him here at our headquarters, where he often comes in late at night to do grading and to help us out with various marketing projects. It's unbelievable to us that someone who is so talented and so highly committed to his students at The University of Akron could make so little money doing it. Matt likes to drive, because it gives him a chance to listen to audio books. His knowledge of politics, philosophy, and current affairs is really remarkable. I think that he listened to like twenty new books on his trip to Alaska and back!"

Located in Canton, Ohio, Little Guy Worldwide is the nation's leading distributor of teardrop camper trailers: small teardrop shaped campers that are a throwback to the home built honeymoon coaches of the 1940s. These little trailers have really been catching on over the past several years as the economy has taken a downturn and consumers are looking for affordable alternatives to large trailers and motor homes that require large tow vehicles and exorbitant fuel budgets. Mr. Williams typically gets about 25 miles per gallon when towing a teardrop camper trailer behind his 2001 VW Passat Wagon. The white glove delivery service offered by Little Guy Worldwide to its customers is just par for the course for this small business. But it's not just Little Guy that is going above and beyond the call of duty for their customers. Part-time faculty often spend considerable time working with students to ensure their success in the classroom. Chris Baum notes, "It's been great to give Mr. Williams this extra little bit of business to help him make ends meet. It's unfortunate, though, that it's often the little guy--like the part-time college lecturer--who seems to always get the raw end of the deal. It's just not right. That's why Little Guy has offered to donate the net profits of a special edition Silver Shadow teardrop camper trailer to New Faculty Majority (NFM) as they struggle to achieve a greater measure of equity for America's adjunct & contingent faculty."

Details of the sale of the teardrop camper are still being arranged between Little Guy and New Faculty Majority. The sale will likely occur via auction on e-Bay, and the trailer will be packaged with a full complement of accessories to be donated by Little Guy partners. Chris Baum expects the auction to happen sometime before the end of September.
