FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 11, 2011 --
During an emergency, many live at home aging seniors face mobility, cognitive, sight, or hearing issues making them less able to save themselves, act fast and fend for themselves. How many aging seniors can run out of a house in less than a minute, dash down a flight of stairs, or drive fast to a safe location in an unforeseen natural disaster? Many do not drive. Often aging Americans need help from others in an emergency. Seniors are frequently isolated, further exasperating the challenge. Houses, apartments and condominiums are not inherently senior friendly. Here are 7 steps to safen living environments for a natural disaster:
1. Sign – up for city emergency alert systems (if your city has one available)
2. Each senior should have one or two dependable people, “emergency buddies” having fast access to them. Remember to include help for the household pet, if possible.
3. Homes & Care residences should be checked by contractors for possible vulnerabilities.
4. Easy entrance and exit areas are a must along with an emergency exit plan. Entrance and exit areas should remain clutter free and well lit.
5. Communication systems: phone, doorbells, TV., computers and and radio's need to be set loud enough in all areas of the home for seniors to hear and easy to access. Emergency telephone numbers should be posted at all times.
6. Personal medical safety devices, many worn 24 hours a day, can be of great benefit during a natural disaster.
7. Each house needs an emergency kit with the following: First aid supplies, flashlight, food, water, blankets, extra medication, medication list, a communication device, and emergency contact information. For the pets: Emergency: blanket, food, water, and medication.
8. Planning and thought will improve the lives at live at home seniors during an emergency. In 2010 & 2011, US natural disasters impacting the lives of at- home seniors included: Tsunami’s, fires, earthquakes, landslides, rain and snow storms, tornado’s & hurricanes.
