Local Photographer Selected as One of 50 Emerging Artists in National Photography Competition

West Palm Beach, Florida, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) February 15, 2012 -- WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Lake Worth photographer Steve Barry, Jr. has been selected as one of 50 emerging artists whose work is featured in the prestigious Philadelphia, PA exhibition: ONWARD Compé ’12 . His photograph is one of 57 curated images on display at the city’s Project Basho Gallery from Feb. 9 through March 25. The photograph, a stark, black-and-white image of a discarded sofa sitting in front of a run-down storefront flying an American flag, is a good representation of Barry’s work, which often depicts isolation in the urban landscape.

“The photographs I take make me comfortable in some way because they are personal retreat of sorts — a travel catalog from my ideal alternate universe,” Barry said. “The photos are documentary in the sense that they are a collection of personal ideas and feelings; but the prints stand as fiction, separate from any connection to actual places.”
Although Barry credits artists Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Sally Mann as major influences, he says that the time he has spent wandering around the world’s remote places has been the biggest influence on his outlook and perceptions. Barry has travelled in Africa, New Zealand and Canada, and has lived in Oregon, Montana, and several parts of Florida and holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from Florida Atlantic University.

His work has been displayed at Art Basel Miami “Components,” Edge Zones, Wynwood Art District; “Art Futures: New Talent,” Gallery Camino Real (Boca Raton, Fla.) and “Pl*stic, mooncruise” gallery (Vancouver, BC), among other locations. The ONWARD Compé ’12 exhibition is held in conjunction with ONWARD Summit, an annual photography conference and networking event for those who are inspired by unique imagery and perspectives. The Project Basho Gallery is open Sunday-Thursday, 12-10 p.m.; Friday 12-5 p.m.; and closed on Sundays.
