Cambridge has a welcoming new wool shop, The Sheep Shop.
Knitting and other crafts such as spinning and crocheting have a huge and growing following in Cambridge. More and more women, young and old, are discovering the joys it brings and even men are giving it a go in Cambridge pubs.
Until now Cambridge has been missing a dedicated wool shop, now it has one only a mile from the city centre, on Beche Road just off Newmarket Road. It stocks a wide range of yarns, from the total luxury of pure silk to alpaca/wool blends for just £2. Several are from local independents such as Purl Alpaca Designs, who raise alpacas near St Ives, Yarnscape, who produces gorgeous hand-dyed yarns near Cambridge, and the Natural Dye Studio from just over the border in Suffolk.
Sarah Clark, the owner of The Sheep Shop says “Making things is an enormously satisfying venture, and choosing what you’re going to feel between your fingers for the next few hours or weeks is one of life’s pleasures. We want to make it a pleasure for people to choose what they need and are all cosy with a sofa, table and chairs and coffee on tap.
It’s not something to be scared of – once you can do the few absolute basics, a beginner can make a lovely hat in about 8 hours, it doesn’t break the bank, and it’s so creative. Great for prezzies.
We’ll be holding classes and a knitting group so people can get together and learn, or just meet other lovely people whilst they get on with what they’re making. Cambridge is full of creativity and we’re proud to be somewhere people can come together.”
Along with the other things you’d expect to find like needles and notions, there’s rug hooking kits and fleece for spinning and felting projects as seen on Kirsty Allsopp’s TV programmes.
