Toyota released information about this groundbreaking vehicle at the second Toyota Sustainable Mobility Seminar held earlier this year. Toyota plans to release 150 vehicles to different groups that qualify as hybrid “subject matter experts”. Such groups include universities, corporations, car sharing programs, and city, state and federal governments. Toyota plans to announce other groups soon. The plug-in Prius will utilize a three part battery pack, with the first battery acting as primary power source, and the second and third kicking in when the first is out of power. The first and second batteries will operate fully on electric power. Once the power in the first two batteries is depleted, the third battery, which will default to traditional hybrid mode, will kick in. The first and second batteries will become the primary power sources once again after the vehicles is plugged in and recharged.
