"The most important thing a couple can do is meet their DJ in person, ask some pointed questions and let the DJ give his/her presentation," says Jones. Since a DJ can serve as entertainment and announcer for a reception, it's important to make sure a DJ has the right personality and an ability to read the crowd. Since music plays a large part in an event, make sure a DJ is willing to take requests that will help to represent the bride and groom but can also use his or her experience to play songs that everyone will enjoy.

Besides all this, make sure a DJ has technical knowledge of his equipment, whether sound or lighting equipment and what backup plans he has in case some of that equipment were to malfuction.

In order for a wedding reception to go smoothly, a DJ must be organized, fun and flexible but above all, a bride and groom need to feel comfortable with the person they are hiring to to entertain their family and friends. “A bride and groom have to trust their gut,” says Jones.

As for cost Jones says you get what you pay for. "If a DJ promises to DJ your wedding for under $1000.00 it’s likely going to be a disaster. Expect to pay $1200-2000.00 for a great DJ."
