Weatherization is a combination of several different bodies of work. First is air sealing. In a typical 2500 square foot home there is over a ½ mile of cracks, crevices and penetrations that air passes through. Unconditioned air will pass through wiring holes, plumbing holes, HVAC holes, dryer vent holes, gaps in framing chases, drop soffits, recessed lighting fixtures and gaps around chimneys and flue pipes. If you add up all the hidden air leaks in your home, they can equal a hole the size of an open window — and can lead to higher energy bills by allowing heat to escape and causing your system to work harder to keep you comfortable. This makes home sealing one of the first and most important steps you can take to reduce home energy costs year-round. By foaming and caulking these penetrations in attics and crawl spaces, weather-stripping and caulking windows and doors, and using gaskets in all outlets 90% of all air infiltration can be stopped dead in its tracks. This alone will lower energy bills and increase comfort. Normal fiberglass insulation is made of glass fibers spun in a similar way as cotton candy. The air in between the fibers is what makes it work. If air is passing through the fibers it ceases to do its job. In addition to air, we are also addressing moisture. Too much moisture in the air will cause building materials to deteriorate and promote mold and mildew. A key component to controlling moisture is to properly vent bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans. Fans should never be vented to the attic….they need to be directly vented to the exterior. Anytime there is excess moisture on windows or staining on bathroom walls there is not proper venting. Insulation is the single most cost effective way for a homeowner to save money on their future energy costs. In Fact, Insulation is the only building product that will actually pay for itself. Adding insulation is a part of almost every weatherization project. Making sure there is enough insulation in the walls, foundation, and roof -- anywhere there is a barrier between the home and the outside-is one of the most important ways to make a home energy efficient. There should be a minimum of R-49 in attic spaces according the DOE recommendations. In most attics you will find an R-19. By blowing insulation or adding batt insulation into attics, crawls, using proper covers for attic access hatches, and insulating water pipes in conjunction with the air sealing one can save at least 30% on heating and cooling costs.
