Actually, these two months (February and March) were very sad and hard because of the damage caused by the floods; many families in the highlands lost their home, their crops, their cattle and their jobs and some lost their lives too. This situation is very difficult and not easy to solve, however tourists can help too, for instance buy from locals in the Indian Markets, eat in good local Restaurants; if you have the chance stay in a local family house just do it.
What happened to Cusco during these two months? Well not only Cusco but also other cities like Lima and Arequipa which are usually visited by thousand of tourists had to change plans.
In Cusco, many Restaurants, Hotels and other business had to close because there were no tourists, Aguas Calientes looked like a ghost town, and nobody could believe that!

Unfortunately, the Peruvian authorities didn’t have an emergency plan; first, they said that Machu Picchu would reopen in 2 or 3 weeks, but they had no idea what had happened, the information was very uncertain! Many tourists had to cancel their trips at the last minute, and those who came to hike the Inca Trail in March had to hike the trail to Choquequirao; this trek is more difficult than the classic Inca trail hike but it is a Lifetime experience too, most of hikers needed to ride a horse to reach Choquequirao. Thanks God Choquequirao is beautiful too so tourists who visited this amazing Inca site smiled at the end. Just to let you know, there are no roads or rail links to visit Choquequirao but friendly horses and mules to make your experience easier!
Finally, if you are planning to visit Machu Picchu in the next 2 or 3 months be sure you have the train tickets in advance; it is and will be difficult to get tickets on short notice. Contact your travel Agent and be sure you have a reservation code! There are 2 train companies Peru Rail and Inca Rail. The trains are leaving from Piscacucho (82 Km) so you will need to go by bus or car from your hotel in Cusco or the valley until Ollantaytambo and from there the train companies have buses to bring passengers to Piscacucho.

Luckily rainy season has finished so you can be sure you will have a great time in Cusco and Machu Picchu but remember rainy season comes again in December.
Hope you can find this information useful
Saludos
