Definitely, Machu Picchu is one of the most amazing Archaeological sites in the world that is why every year more and more visitors are coming to South America to see this unique place. So far all looks great, however if you choose a destination like Machu Picchu to have a lifetime experience, there are issues to take into consideration while planning your trip to ensure you have a really memorable holiday otherwise you may not enjoy it.
Altitude: personally I think this the most important fact that you have to pay attention if you are not used to high altitudes (Over 9000 feet). In order to visit Machu Picchu you will need to arrive in Cusco even by plane or bus; on the way to your hotel you will see the beautiful Incan and Colonial Buildings, churches and temples, you will feel so astonished by such a magic place that as soon as you check in your hotel you will step out to explore the Incas’ capital and you may forget Cusco altitude, the city is located at 11,000 feet approximately, it is not so simple. Altitude sickness may affect anyone, it doesn’t matter how fit you are so you must remember that your body will need time to adjust to decreased levels of oxygen in the highlands. What happen if you get altitude sickness? You may start with mild symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea and shortness of breath, if these symptoms are not controlled properly, severe symptoms may arrive like pulmonary edema or cerebral edema.
During my personal trips to Cusco and Lake Titicaca I have seen, many sad situations so I decided to write about how to avoid them; some tourists just came to Peru to get sick, I couldn’t believe it.
Please find below some tips to ensure you have an enjoyable experience in Machu Picchu:
1. Sleep well the night before you arrive in Cusco, at least 8 hours (If you fly from Lima to Cusco)
2. As soon as you arrive in Cusco, you need to rest for at least 6 hours. If possible, as soon as you arrive in Cusco go down to the Sacred Valley and stay there for a better adjustment to the altitude.
3. Drink large amounts of water to stay hydrated, coca tea, Gatorade, or bottled water (Don’t drink tap water).
4. Don’t drink alcohol, caffeine and forget smoking cigarettes.
5. Have only light meals during your stay in Cusco.
6. Catch your breath, don’t push yourself and you will enjoy Machu Picchu.
Stomach problems: it may occur any time; it may be a symptom of the altitude sickness or due to any other reason like eating salad or some fruit. Digestion is slower in the highlands so be sure to eat light and drink enough water, another problem is diarrhea which may happen as well. What to do to avoid these problems? Drink only boiled water or bottled water, avoid raw salads, drink light meals while travelling in the highlands, avoid snacks given on the plane from Lima to Cusco, have just water.
Strikes: you can’t do much if a strike happens during your trip in Peru; the most common areas where they may occur is in Puno (Lake Titicaca) and Cusco. Be sure to have local contacts from your travel Agent in case a strike occurs. In case of a strike your itinerary may be altered in order to be safe and continue travelling.
Peru is a safe and beautiful country full of amazing landscapes and ancient culture that you will enjoy if you know how to travel in the highlands.
If you ever get sick don’t hesitate to contact a Physician as soon as possible, your travel Agent should provide you with one or the hotel staff may call one for you. If you are in trouble in Cusco you can contact one of the best Physicians I met Dr. Manuel Manrique, he has a lot of experience and he is very fluent in English and he can visit you in your hotel, you can reach him on 984620215 or 221742.
I have this information help you have a memorable holiday in Peru
Hasta pronto
