It’s about an American region rising from the ashes and re-inventing itself. Imported from Detroit? What about “Imported from Northeast Ohio”?

Northeast Ohio has long been the home to some of the most impressive manufacturing companies and facilities in the world. Many Fortune 500 companies call this region home such as Goodyear, Eaton, FirstEnergy, and Parker Hannifin. The area also has 37% of the Fortune 500 companies represented with facilities, headquarters, or large scale operations in the region including General Electric, PPG, Emerson, Ford, General Motors, Lockheed Martin, Alcoa, and many more. Other companies, such as lawn care equipment manufacturer MTD; food and beverage giant Nestle; engineering experts Babcock &Wilcox; leading paint and color company Sherwin Williams; and Rockwell Automation, also help support the economy of this area.

Countless small to midsize companies, like Master Tool and Horsburgh & Scott, supply tooling, materials, and provide machine building and engineering services that help support these large scale operations. These companies and many others have helped the Northeast Ohio area post six consecutive quarters of growth as well as a lower than the national average unemployment rate. The biggest problem this region faces is filling these jobs with qualified people to sustain its growth potential.

The obstacle Search Masters and many similar firms continue to face is the skills gap resulting from a change in the labor force – the problem that there is a shortage of fresh faces to replace the retiring Baby Boom generation. Ohio Governor John Kasich, in his recent state of the State address, has urged parents and teachers to encourage the upcoming generations to not avoid manufacturing, industrial, and engineering jobs, as it has helped revitalize the state.
