There are many kinds of Maine Seafoods caught from the Coastal atlantic water . Depending on the time of year can make a big difference on its price and freshness. Shrimp season which ended early this year lasts from Dec to Now during most years but due to a high volume catch the business was shut down early . Frozen Maine shrimp is available but we will all have to wait untill Dec for another fresh haul . Maine soft shell clams are dug year round . We also harvest razor clams when tides are large as well as cohogs , littlenecks ,cherrystone and mahogany clams . The price of clams is always at its lowest from Nov to May . This is a great time to buy fresh shucked soft shell clams as prices are nearly 50% less wholesale then in summer months. Maine lobster is of great quality this time of year . Almost all Maine lobster caught right now have a nice hard shell and are full of meat. These prices are slighly higher then in summer months for the same quality lobster, although the true sweet Maine lobster does not come around untill July . Mussels are available both farm raised and wild although i have seen many more wild mussels sold recently then farm raised . I prefer wild blue mussels over farm raised as we are very picky about there sizes and coler . Our wild blue mussels are cleaned well and kept with care . I have seen many blue mussel crops produce a smaller meat volume then a well selected wild mussel will contain . Oysters are Available all times of year although winter conditions will make any kind of farming hard , especially that done on the ocean . Wild oysters tend to be just as good and generally come from the same waters and kinds of seed . Being careful with selecting them is the key to a good oyster. Maine crabing is really more of a side business for a commercial lobster man then a true venture . In many lobstering areas crab has been caught up . They are actually quite hard to get in mass amounts although we are in good supply and have fresh crab meat by the pound through our seafood shop. Look for future articles regarding , Maine ground fish , Sea urchins , glass eels , perriwinkles , mackeral , and more .
