Majority of NC Policyholder Purchase Optional Auto Insurance Coverages

The majority of drivers purchase medical payments, comprehensive and collision in addition to liability and uninsured motorist protections.

Raleigh -- Free-Press-Release.com-- Mar 9, 2011 -- Aside from the fact that North Carolina auto insurance companies asked for no rate change, the 2011 filing included another interesting fact about NC policyholders. The filing showed that a healthy majority of policies issued in the state in 2009 included optional insurance types, like medical payments and collision and comprehensive protection.

All policies issued in the state must provide bodily injury liability, property damage liability and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages. But they aren’t required to provide protection for a policyholder’s own medical bills, damage to his or her auto from a crash, or damage to the car caused by acts of nature, which medical payments, collision and comprehensive policies cover, respectively.

Despite this fact, 73 percent of policies included medical payments, about 71 percent included comprehensive coverage and about 65 percent included collision coverage.

The report also provided insight into the average cost of a year of protection under each of these types of insurance. Averages for 2009 were $161 for bodily injury liability, $148 for property damage liability, $31 for medical payments, $100 for comprehensive and $245 for collision.

Actual prices for a policy, however, will vary depending on driving history of the prospective policyholder. Residents can access the Safe Driver Incentive Point fact sheet on the North Carolina Department of Transportation website to see what types, and how much, certain infractions can boost premiums.
