NW Sustainable Building Products in Portland Oregon is continuing to supply Juniper lumber to schools and community gardens to promote good health and educate the community about growing food locally
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 4, 2011 --
Juniper lumber is the most rot resistant lumber product on the market today. It outperforms pressure treated wood. It outperforms cedar at 1/2 the cost. It is harvested to maintain the range lands in central Oregon and California. It is pest and rot resistant to such a degree that Oregon State University Forestry Program has estimated the usable life of a Juniper 6x6 to be 30 years longer than any other western species. In reality, that means a 50+ year usable life span for Juniper.
With the low cost and unmatched performance of Juniper, NW SUSTAINABLE BUILDING PRODUCTS has made a commitment to the local community to supply the local schools and the local community gardens with this amazing resource. From grade schools to high schools, the land available to garden on is easily accessed and ready to GROW! All it takes is a few goodhearted volunteers and a few kids who are going to learn about ecology, farming, food production , composting, etc. to make it happen.
In the small community of Milwaukie, at Candy Lane School, NWSBP supplied Juniper for raised planter boxes. The program is very successful. It was never intended to be a source of food for the school to serve the students, it is meant for the students to take home to their families. In this area of Oregon, many families are needing help to get good nutritious food. This program was funded by the school district as an educational tool. The byproduct is so valuable to the families that needed the assistance that the funding is being expanded to allow more food production and help to feed more families. The goal being healthier students who will learn more because they are more alert and miss fewer classes due to illness.
NW SUSTAINABLE BUILDING PRODUCTS will continue to help in these projects as long as the need is there. Soon a community garden in NE Portland will be getting the first supply of 2x6 Juniper to build their garden with.
NWSBP is located at 6821 SE Johnson Cr Blvd. in Portland Oregon. Visit them on the web at nwsbp.com.
An addition to this story. The funding that was provided by the PTA of Candy Lane School has been halted. The district is suffering financially as many districts are. As a community we need to get out and take part in these opportunities. The earth will provide us with the food we need if we ask it to. It does not take much money. It does take a little effort and a little time. But, the payback is tremendous. Feeding children healthy organic produce from our own back yards is the cherry on this sundae. Go ahead... GET DIRTY TO EAT CLEAN!!!!
