Salt Lake Tribune Article

John Maxim 32 of Salt Lake City has battled with HSBC in what he calls a nightmare loan modification process that has ended with his house going to auction.

John Maxim, like so many other home owners, got behind in his loan payments to HSBC. In an effort to reconcile with his lender John began the long and difficult process of a Loan Modification.

After months of repeated paperwork John had verbal approval from HSBC to proceed with the Loan Modification reinstatement amount of $5500. When John received confirmation of the reinstatement amount it was $1000.00 more than what he expected, money John didn't have. John contacted HSBC and asked if he could be granted an additional month to cover the unexpected $1000.00. HSBC agreed.

The following month John had earned the addition money required by HSBC to proceed with the Loan Modification. John called HSBC to complete the agreement; but John made a startling discovery. During the course of his "additional" month HSBC abruptly changed their Loan Modification requirements and restrictions informing John that the actual amount owed was $21,000.00 because the foreclosure process had already begun months earlier when discussions of the Loan Modification began.

Not proud to admit his mistakes, John feels that his options are limited. Last Friday John posted a blog asking for donation to his cause. Knowing that life isn't about giving something for nothing, John came up with a clever idea. He offered to set his car on fire if he collected the required money from donation to reinstate his loan. John fully admits that his plan is derived from desperation but sees no other alternative.

FOLLOW UP JULY 26th, 2010

At 8:46 AM July 26th John Maxim received the final donation needed to reinstate his loan with HSBC. John was at the Matheson Court house at 9:15 AM as the attorney from HSBC was about to begin the auction. John took a cashiers check out of his pocket in the amount of $21,638.52 and handed it over to the attorney, the exact amount required by HSBC to prevent his property from going to sale. John is true to his word and intends on setting his car on fire this next week!
