It is commonly utilized in fiber optic systems where the optical power from the source is too high for the equipment in use.

This manual variable optical attenuator is characterized by an epoxy-free optical path, insertion loss of less than 1.5dB, return loss of over 55dB without a connector and polarization dependent loss of less than 0.2dB. It reduces the amplitude or power without appreciably distorting the waveform. The reliable attenuator works at wavelengths from 1290nm to 1625nm within the attenuation level range of 10dB to 45dB.
