Map Abday - Think Design Magazine May 2011 Artist of the Month - Creative Director Trisha Miller, Phuket

Map was born in Southern Thailand. All through her life, even as a very young girl, she has seen the world through its colours. When anxious or angry she remembers things as red or purple. When she was happy she remembers pastel blues and colours that she deemed happy at the time. She spent her formative years in Bangkok where she studied at Thaivichitsilp Art School and Poh-chang Art Institution. During her time in Bangkok she began to understand that for her, art is everything. She began to understand that without art, there was no humanity, when you are hungry, there cannot be art, only survival. After her studies, she travelled while working as interior designer for “La Scala” to Spain, France and Italy. It was during this time that she concluded that she wanted to dedicate her working life to art and to becoming an artist in the true sense. Since that time, she has defined the success of her art in terms unrelated to the critical or financial approval of each piece. She now lives in Phuket with her Canadian husband, Kenneth Abday and two children Karyth & Karina. They have been here full time for about ten years. She has her studio here and continues to destroy it with wayward paint. The real surprise from the beginning, upon meeting her, is the way that her intensity towards art is so thoroughly present in her voice and in her way of discussing the work.
