The Future.... Marcus Harris Jr. Nike Valor Meet Story - ESPN RISE

The Present and the Future
Marcus Harris Jr. does not lack for hype. Last year’s AAU 200 meter champion has already run the second fastest 60 meter time ever by a freshman. Three weeks ago he came up to Fort Collins’ Runners Roost Invite and won both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash. He came up second at both events last week at the Mullen Invitational. Standing in between Harris’s goal of a Valor double loomed Kenny Chambers.
Now in his senior season at Doherty, Chambers brought an air of experience and confidence to the event. Such calmness is to be expected of an individual who has stood high on the podium at the Colorado State meet on numerous occasions.
Exploding from the blocks in the 100, Chambers burst out to an early lead. Despite a noble effort by the freshman, Chambers used a strong tailwind to propel him to a lead that would not dissipate despite Harris’s best efforts. When the dust had settled, Chambers had run an impressive (if wind aided) 10.54. Harris and fellow freshman Sloyde Bankston of Fountain-Fort Carson (Fort Carson, Colo.) ran 10.60 and 10.80, respectively.
Harris wouldn’t have to wait too long to experience the top of the podium. With the wind gone and the sun out, a solid 200 field of 22-second qualifiers lined up in all nine lanes of Valor Christian’s 3-year-old 4,200 seat stadium. After qualifying third in the 200 prelims, Harris took the point position out of the blocks and stormed away to a new meet record of 21.64 in the finals.
Second place finisher Markesh Woodson had already accomplished plenty in the meet. In the 4x200 meter relay he pulled Fountain-Fort Carson to within a half-second of Cherokee Trail, who ran a state leading 1:27.99. An hour later in the 4x100, Woodson came off the final exchange a few strides behind Cherokee Trail’s Stephan Dickens, the runner who edged him out in the previous relay.
This time the sophomore Woodson and Fountain-Fort Carson would prevail, edging Cherokee Trail by a mere .03 seconds.
