Marine Corps General, native Bostonian rededicates Marine Barracks at Charlestown Navy Yard on Mother’s Day

BOSTON (May 9, 2010) - Marine Lt. Gen. John F. Kelly, a Boston native and 1976 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, will rededicate the oldest extant Marine Corps Barracks structure in honor of Marines past, present and future in a ceremony today at 2 p.m. at the Charlestown Navy Yard.

The oldest Marine Barracks site is located in Washington D.C. Still, the Charlestown-based barracks was built more than 200 years ago and is the oldest Marine barracks building. It was closed and officially transferred to the National Park Service in 1974.
The rededication is part of the final activities of Marine Week Boston, which began last Monday when Mayor Thomas M. Menino proclaimed May 3-9 “Marine Week.” Marine Week Boston brings more than 900 Marines to showcase military equipment displays, perform community outreach projects and honor local Marines and their families during Marine Week Boston.
Prior to the ceremony, the Corps will honor the mothers of fallen U.S. servicemembers during a special brunch at the Barracks. All mothers are invited to attend the rededication.

Other Marine Week Boston activities for May 9 include:
• 11:30 a.m.: Marines will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial (USS Constitution).
• 12:30 p.m.: Marines will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony at the Korean War Memorial (USS Constitution).
