Mark Visentin Leads Canada To Win

Sick Hockey Gear’s Mark Visentin led his teammates to a convincing win over team U.S.A securing Canada’s birth in Wednesday’s gold medal game against the Russians. Although the score seemed close at 4-1, the Canadians dominated all aspects of the game. If it were not for Jack Campbell in the U.S.A goal making 37 saves, the score could have been much worse. Both tenders won the game M.V.P honours at the conclusion of the exciting contest.

Visentin looked sharp and confident on the world stage making 22 saves and only allowing the one goal. His rebound control was excellent but his puck handling skills really showed why he was a first round choice of the Phoenix Coyotes in last summer’s NHL draft. Throughout the game, Visentin ventured from his net to play shoot- ins to his teammates aiding his defense at every opportunity. The Niagara Ice Dogs tender was even able to earn an assist on Canada’s second goal by Quinton Howden as he steered the puck up the boards and out of his zone.

Canada was able to revenge last year’s loss to team U.S.A in the finals by sending the American team to compete for the bronze medal against Sweden also on Wednesday. Many speculated before the tournament that a U.S.A / Sweden match up would be the gold medal game, but a pro Canadian crowd helped Canada defeat the tournament defending champions. Although the game was played on American soil, the sea of red dominated about 75% of the sold out crowd at the HSBC arena.

This year’s Canadian team was built specifically to match up against the American squad. It is the second biggest Canadian team in world junior history. Although team U.S.A is a much more experienced squad with eight returning players from last year’s gold medal team, they seemed to play into Canada’s game plan. The Canadians kept the game along the walls and used a high pressure checking style to neutralize a much faster U.S team. The Americans had very limited time and space and the Canucks used their size to pound their opposition at every opportunity.

After an almost flawless game, Visentin will undoubtedly be Canada`s starting goalkeeper and lead the team into their tenth consecutive gold medal appearance. This will be the biggest game of his young career and it will provide a lifetime of memories for the kid from Waterdown Ontario.
