Investigating the intriguing possibility of past civilizations on Mars

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Cydonian Hills region on Mars has attracted much notoriety because one of the hills from a 1976 NASA photo looks like a face and others resemble pyramids, fortresses and city buildings. These photos have attracted both scientific and popular interest.

Experts say our brains like to organize things into recognizable images and I admit I am a person who can easily look at bright white fluffy clouds and pick out images of elephants, cartoon characters and such. That said, one only has to look at photos of Cydonia Region on Mars and clearly see a large humanoid face, pyramids, a fortress and other city buildings.

This is where the Mars Conspiracy Theory comes to play. Is our government not telling us the whole story? Why would they try to hide the discovery of past civilizations on Mars? What are your thoughts?

When did the idea of intelligent life on Mars first be reported?

In 1894, when astronomer Percival Lowell built the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Arizona. Lowell's main telescope there was a 24” Alvan Clark refractor, with which he studied Mars. Lowell was inspired by respected astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, who had reported dark, narrow lines on Mars and called them “canali” (Italian for “channels”). Lowell saw them also, and became convinced these were canals built by intelligent beings.

Because Lowell's telescope was one of the best in the world at the time, his theory of intelligent life on Mars caused quite a stir in the world of astronomy. Lowell traveled around the country lecturing on his Martian canals and the possibility of life there. In one of his presentations a boy was listening and became excited about the possibility of actually going to Mars. The boy was Robert Goddard, who went on to become the father of U.S. rocket science.

Eventually other astronomers using better quality telescopes, such as the great Mars observer E. M. Antonialdi (whose maps of the surface features of Mars and Mercury were not bettered until these planets were mapped by spacecraft) were unable to see the canals, and Lowell finally abandoned the concept of life on Mars.

Physiologists note that the when the brain processes images it tends to accentuate the boundaries between subtle differences in brightness - it has been proposed that this is the effect which gave rise to the lines Schiaparelli and Lowell saw.
