FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Augusta, Maine, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) February 24, 2012 -- Matthew B. Dineen’s Coaching Philosophy

My coaching philosophy stems from a mix of the Essentialist and Progressivist educational philosophies. My image of what a coach should be is that of a figure of authority and a resource of knowledge and motivation.

I feel that a coach should be an authority figure responsible for implementing an appropriate goal structure and creating an atmosphere in which the coach and the athlete are able to work together to reach common / team goals.

I value the lecture method of coaching. Lectures give the athletes the basic knowledge needed to gain an understanding of the skill or system being taught and provides the athletes the opportunity to explore the material presented through questioning. The coach is responsible for assessing and providing feedback while guiding the student’s progress toward the desired outcomes.

I also value the Progressivist method of teaching and apply it to my coaching through active student examinations of the material presented. I feel that by being actively involved, the athletes are better able to make the material more personal and thus better understood. The coach is responsible for encouraging the student to accept the challenge of becoming involved as well as facilitating the interaction among athletes and between athletes and coach necessary to achieve the intended instructional goals.

In addition to the coach encouraging athlete involvement and creating an instructional climate that facilitates learning, I also feel that a wide variety of training types need to be offered to the athletes. While the “basic” instruction within the specific sport needs to be the main focus, I think that cross trainning is important to understanding and enjoying Athletics is an important element in creating a well rounded athlete.
