Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Republic of (Free-Press-Release.com) September 29, 2010 -- MCHI urges state government to intervene on sand shortage

Mumbai, September 29, 2010: Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry, the apex body of real estate developers, has sought state government’s urgent intervention in the shortage of sand, which is posing a serious threat to the construction industry across the state. The MCHI has also suggested alternative steps to restore the sand supply.

In a letter addressed to Maharashtra Revenue Minister Mr. Narayan Rane, MCHI President Mr. Sunil Mantri said, “The construction sites at various places across Mumbai city have come to a halt on account of acute shortage in the supply of sand”, while urging the minister to look into the matter and resolve the issue at an early date”.

Recalling the MCHI’s joint initiative with the state government announced early this year for providing five lakh homes in the coming five years, the MCHI president stated that the availability of sand is very crucial in order to meet the target set for creation of affordable housing stock.

The MCHI President has suggested some alternative steps such as allowing import of sand from the neighbouring states, removal of Excise Duty and other Taxes on artificial manufacturing of sand and providing the incentives on innovative technology developments by the developers.

Total sand consumption in Maharashtra is approximately 65.55 million tonnes with a growth rate of 7 per cent of more. Hence, the shortage of sand likely to affect the real estate development in the state of Maharashtra, the MCHI President opined.
