Senate Candidate, Larry Medaglia Offers Plan to Eliminate Property Taxes

READING, PA – February 21, 2011 - The elimination of Pennsylvania’s property tax system stands as a top priority for Larry Medaglia, Republican candidate for the March 15th special election in Pennsylvania’s 11th Senatorial District.

At a town hall meeting focusing on senior issues, Medaglia told the group, “My highest priority in office will be working for the elimination of property taxes.” Medaglia said he would fund local government by adopting a broad-based sales tax with a rate of less than 6% - the current rate levied throughout most of Pennsylvania’s counties. Medaglia outlined several advantages of a sales tax system over property taxes aside from the most important fact that it will keep residents in their homes. “Everyone is a consumer,” Medaglia said, “so you decide how much you’ll pay in taxes.”

Medaglia also heralded the plan as a less costly system to administer. “For example, we could eliminate the need for countywide re-assessments saving taxpayers millions of dollars. In addition,” Medaglia pointed out, “we already have a system in place to collect a sales tax.”

Medaglia said local governments would also benefit from a sales tax system. “With a sales tax, local governments will receive revenue with greater frequency and predictability throughout the year, reducing the need for costly short-term borrowing.” Medaglia went on to say, “[w]ith property taxes, municipalities receive revenue in large amounts only a few times each year. For capital and operating budgetary reasons, local governments would benefit from the greater frequency and predictability of revenue, which a sales tax system would provide.”

Larry Medaglia has served Berks County as Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphan’s Court since 1996. He received the Republican nomination to fill the 11th Senate District seat during a special meeting of the Berks GOP on January 22nd. Please visit our web site at www.larrymedaglia.com.
