Costumed Union Carpenters Perform Street Theatre Protest of Schaumburg Marriott

WHO: More than 25 members of the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters in costume performing street theatre

WHAT: A labor dispute protest against the Marriott Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center

WHERE: Marriott Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center, 1551 N. Thoreau Drive, Schaumburg, IL 60173, just off Meacham Road north of I-90.

WHEN: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Rain date is Wednesday, August 19, 2009, from 10:00 am until noon.

WHY: At issue is the Marriott Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center’s housekeepers’ pay, benefits and unfair labor practices.

The protesters are informing the public that the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters is engaged in a labor dispute over unfair labor practices and the payment of substandard wages and benefits at the Marriott Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center.
According to Richard Albrecht, a spokesperson for the Carpenters Council, “The payment of substandard wages and benefits to these workers impacts every working man and woman in our local community who has fought for and received living wages and benefits to protect themselves and their families.”

VISUALS: Banners, signs, and 25 men and women carpenters performing street theatre dressed as housekeepers, room attendants, hotel managers, hotel security, Lady Liberty, Uncle Sam and the Grim Reaper in acts of employee mistreatment, such as hauling a caisson and being bound in chains and shackles.
