The concept of past life regression has been explored as far back as the 2nd century BCE by the Hindu scholar Patanjali. During the 1950's there was the story of Virginia Tighe, a housewife living in Pueblo, Colorado who under hypnosis with her therapist Morey Bernstein, started describing the life of a woman who lived in Ireland during the early 1800's and who went by the name of Bridey Murphy. During the sessions she described in great detail the life of this other woman and even changed her pattern of speech to an Irish brogue. Bernstein later wrote the bestseller The Search for Bridey Murphy, which was later made into a film.

During the 1980's, Dr. Brian Weiss, a prominent South Florida psychiatrist, wrote of his experiences with his patient Catherine in Many Lives, Many Masters in which she recalls past-life traumas that seemed to hold the answers to her recurring nightmares and anxiety attacks.
