Michael Jackson Artwork to Raise Funds for New Orleans Musicians Borrows Recent Book Title

NEW ORLEANS, LA August 26, 2009 - A new artistic image featuring Michael Jackson on Andrew Jackson’s bronze horse statue in New Orleans’ Jackson Square is now available as a poster and other merchandise to help raise funds for the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund. The image is titled “Jackson Squared,” which is borrowed from a recent murder mystery novel by New Orleans writer Robert Smallwood. Smallwood rode Katrina out and penned the first personal account published of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, titled, “The Five People You Meet in Hell: Surviving Katrina.”

Michael Jackson’s birthday falls on the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans, August 29. Jackson was to be buried on that day but his burial has been postponed to the following week. The newly-designed image, created by New Orleans pop artist L. Steve Williams, Jr., features Michael Jackson in a band uniform waving his magic glove while perched atop Andrew Jackson’s horse.

Michael's trademark band uniform is especially appropriate because 500 pounds worth of band uniforms are on their way from a New Jersey school to a New Orleans school for its first marching band. The Jackson Squared Campaign hopes to gain support for helping displaced musicians to return to New Orleans.

The image is available on a variety of merchandise including posters, t-shirts, coffee mugs and more. Jackson Squared will reach New Orleans shops soon but for now, Jackson Squared merch is available online.

Smallwood’s “Jackson Squared” book is available on Amazon.com and in Barnes & Noble stores nationwide. It has been likened to the madcap Pulitzer winner, “A Confederacy of Dunces,” by John Kennedy O’Toole. Smallwood recently completed a European book tour.
