The only saving grace is that the Wisconsin protests may stir widespread rebellion. Michael Moore was there. He spoke. He was cheered. And he is very optimistic about the movement and the moment.

I watched Michael Moore’s Capitalism, a Love Story yesterday and found two moments (among many great ones) particularly noteworthy. The first is when Moore asks a string of Wall Street traders exiting the New York Stock Exchange to explain what a derivative is, only to be told that he should “stop making movies.” The extent to which those in power despise Michael Moore and view him as a threat can be found in Wendell Potter’s Deadly Spin, in which the author, a former CIGNA PR executive turned whistle blower, dedicates an entire chapter to discussing the health insurance industry’s campaign against Sicko. The other important sequence in Capitalism, which was made in 2009, is Obama’s election, ironically the most depressing part of the documentary in retrospect because at the time it appeared Obama would seriously push back against unfettered capitalism.
Moore is so dangerous in the eyes of corporations that, according to Deadly Spin, the insurance industry’s “worst case scenario plan” in combating Sicko was “to push Moore off the cliff,” though Potter contends that was not a literal option. As early as 2004 “at least six drug companies had been warning their employees, in internal e-mails, to keep an eye out for Moore” because they heard he was planning to expose the ills of for-profit healthcare. After one of these emails was leaked to the press, company executives employed “the code term ‘Hollywood’ in communications… about Moore and his movie.”..,
