Microsoft artical on Tribal Existance Productions Worldwide Listen Before You Tweet Many CIOs appear to be kicking the tires on Twitter, the micro-blogging sensation that has risen in prominence among social networking and collaboration technologies. With the help of several new Web applications, they can "listen" to Twitter chatter and decide whether it's the right technology for them. Sept 9, 2009 By Ryan McBride, CIO Custom Solutions Group CIOs can tap into the Twitter directory at WeFollow to find their peers. A search in mid-August found more than 110 people "tweeting" under the CIO tag. That may not seem like a large number, but consider this: those 110 Tweeters have a combined total of nearly 73,000 followers. Then there's Twitterfall, which allows users to follow multiple trends on Twitter simultaneously, by subject or geographic location of the source. For example, if you want to know who is tweeting about business intelligence (BI) and what is being tweeted, Twitterfall can query the Twitter server and feed all current mentions of BI to your browser in near real-time. It will also help identify potential thought leaders with whom CIOs can connect. Other sites with listening and trend-tracking capabilities include CrowdEye, a Twitter search engine in beta that aims to be the Google search for Twitter, and Happn.in, which tracks the most popular phrases in tweets made from dozens of major metropolitan areas around the world. What about the value of Twitter and its offshoots? Marcus Chapman, CIO of Tribal Existance Productions Worldwide based in San Francisco, says his presence on Twitter has helped him connect with decision-makers in several market verticals that his company serves around the world. Like other CIOs on Twitter, Chapman likes to tweet about his company's recent feats. For example, he recently tweeted that his firm will be creating a new visual theme for New York City's Christmas presentations this year. "I try to put things up there about where we are working and who we are working with," says Chapman, who has accumulated more than 700 followers since he joined Twitter last year. Tribal, which has expertise in laser light shows and lighting production, works with movie studios, live music shows, consumer goods companies and others. Chapman says his company has also used MySpace, YouTube, facebook, and other social Web platforms to maintain contact with its diverse customer base. Chapman's social networking endeavors in the collaboration space are indicative of a trend among CIOs. According to a recent CIO magazine survey of its readers, collaboration tools such as Twitter are high on their list of technology priorities, with 50 percent indicating that collaboration technologies are on their radar or under review.
