http://www.highlightspr.co.uk Jim Tuck from Cambois near Blyth has always been interested in model making and now his intricate skills are being used to provide collectors with the antiques of the future. Jim’s business Olde Earth, specialises in making bronze and pewter cold cast figures of historical scenes, railway engines and military personnel and already his creations are attracting major interest from individual collectors and regimental associations.
The cold cast process is a long and labour intensive one involving moulds, resin templates and complex machine tooling. Each newly commissioned figure is first sculpted by ex soldier Paul Edward Dunn from Trimdon Grange in County Durham who expertly produces a wax model from which the moulds can be made. Every model is full of small detail which Jim believes sets his work apart from the competition.
“Every figure is researched in minute detail to ensure that historical details are factually correct,” said Jim. “Every badge on the uniform is correct as is the clothing of the period. I’ll only do a figure if I know it is correct in every way.”
One satisfied customer is the Durham Light Infantry whose specially commissioned World War One “Tommy” statuettes sold out after selling 500 pieces to association members and friends of the regiment.
Jim has also received free business support from Billy Webber, enterprise coach with Go Wansbeck. This has included help marketing the products as well as practical advice about financial issues and sales targets.
“Jim’s work is fantastic,” said Billy. “He doesn’t make ornaments, what he is doing is recreating history in miniature for future generations to enjoy and remember.”
