How not performing "ID and right-to-work" checks can damage a reputation!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 25, 2009 -- Some say that a good reputation is your most valuable asset, without a good reputation the credibility of an individual or business can be severely affected.

Building a good reputation from both a business and personal perspective can take a lifetime, unfortunately it can be damaged beyond repair by one fatal error in judgement. The onus on employers to perform "ID and right-to-work" is ever increasing, ignorance is not accepted for a business that employs illegal workers.

Recent examples are the situation with Baroness Scotland employing an illegal worker in the UK, and supermarket retailer Londis employing four illegal workers. These type of incidents seriously taint previous impeccable personal and professional reputations, in both cases the UK Border Agency did not hesitate to take action.

The UK Border Agency is pro-actively enforcing laws against businesses that do not fulfil their legal obligations, specifically confirming the legal right of their employees and their "ID and right-to-work" status of non-European employees.

Failure to verify the identification and employment status of a permanent employee or contractor can result in heavy fines for employers, the UK Border Agency can enforce a £10,000 fine per illegal worker. In addition to fines from the UK Border Agency, a business will suffer reputational damage, this legal obligation can affect all employers, from SMEs to major corporate firms.

ID verification can prove a real issue for businesses who are reliant upon sub-contractors, especially if they are from multiple countries. They are presented with the dilemma of how they can confirm the ID of an employee quickly and cost efficiently.

Diligent Compliance are specialists in providing global ID verification systems for multiple vertical sectors, from financial services, to legal and retail. Our expertise enables us to recognise the burden in processing new employees, from the additional costs to man-hours involved.
