Modern Day Small Business Model - It's All About the Review

September 16, 2010

The importance of user reviews and why you want to be part of the conversation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 16, 2010 -- A couple of short decades ago the typical small business owner would start their entrepreneurial effort with some very traditional steps. Acquiring a location of some sort and fix it up, put up some signs, a fresh coat of paint. They'd get their inventory in place and/or bring in all the equipment and people necessary to provide a service of some sort, and they were pretty much in business. Open the doors and now all that was needed was to get the word out.

The word got out on paper, on radio, and for some elite few on T.V. (Typically local)

newspaperAll that changed of course in the early 90s.

Does the business need a location? Not necessarily.

Does the business need staff? Not as many.

Do we need ads in the paper? Not really.

How about radio & television? Not as effective anymore.

But what about a web presence? Well that of course is the new business model and it is imperative to your small business survival that you get on to the Web 2.0 philosophy of online business conduct.

The unprecedented change this new model reflects is the fact that your audience now has a recordable communication pathway to you and your other customers. This viral form of communication can act both for and against your business.

Let's say a restaurant owner introduces a successful new dish. A few well written reviews by a few online savvy customers posted within their social network circle, could very well result in several thousand like minded customers being made aware of this new dish with a 24 hour period. A subsequent customer increase occurs.

Likewise a negative customer experience is just as likely to spread negativity regarding your business at an equal or greater volume, and a subsequent customer decrease occurs.

I'm simplifying this examination to some degree but the point is that your customers now have the ability to review your business and share that review in an instant.

Today's business owner requires a web presence that enables them to be part of the conversation. You need to know what your customers are saying about you so you can defend negativity and promote positive feedback. Simply having a web site is not going to do it. You want to be part of your customers social networks. This can be accomplished in a number of way but the point it you need to get in there, and when you see them comment on your business you can jump into the conversation and make a point in your favor that is seen by the community.

There is so much to this new business model. Far more than can be covered in this small article. Look to williamrosssolutions.com for more.
