Its Sentinel Plus software suite provides a single integrated platform for the monitoring of alarm panels, video systems, environmental monitoring, GPS asset tracking and lone worker devices. Developed over the last 25 years, Monitor Computer Systems’ share of the alarm monitoring market has steadily grown to a dominant position, securing 55% of the market in the UK and Ireland today.

Originally developed using the Gupta/Centura Team Developer software development toolset, Monitor’s IT Development Manager, Jason Williams explained that while the platform was a technically advanced development environment in its day, the toolset now lagged behind the Microsoft Visual Studio offering in terms of productivity, modern UI options and available components. “It’s also becoming more and more difficult to find good developers with relevant experience” said Williams “and when we do, they tend to come at a premium”. So following a detailed evaluation and proof of concept Dataline was commissioned to migrate the Sentinel Plus system to C#.NET using the Ice Tea Group’s market leading Ice Porter toolset.

“Dataline was able to demonstrate a proof of concept running against our Informix database in a couple of weeks. That convinced us that migration was a practical option and much cheaper and quicker that a re-write from the ground up” Williams noted. John Cuthbert at Dataline Software said “The project was unusual in the number of third party components and controls the application uses to interface to a wide variety of monitoring devices, but the migration went very smoothly and we got an excellent conversion rate with the Ice Porter tools. Jason and his team can now move forward with their plans to modernise and extend the system with greater flexibility and a much larger pool of resources at their disposal”.
