The Chinese Moon Festival is one of the biggest annual holidays in China. It is also called the Mooncake Festival or Lantern Festival.Chinese Moon Festival is a celebration of the Autumn harvest. It occurs when the moon is the brightest. and the highest in the sky. This celebration is one of the oldest holidays in the world, dating back thousands of years. Early celebrations included worship of the moon as a god.Today, the Chinese Moon Festival is celebrated as a national holiday in China and other Asian countries. People take the day off from work. They view the moon They cook and enjoy family and friends.Making, giving, and eating mooncakes is an tradition on this day.On the 15th and 16th days of the 8th lunar month, families will go out after dinner with their lanterns to do moon gazing. Traditional ones are made of paper. Round fan fold ones are the basic ones while fruit and animal shaped lanterns like rabbit, fish, butterfly and star fruit shaped ones are for children. Candles are used to light up the lanterns traditionally but modern safety concern has brought battery powered plastic cartoon characters like Hello Kitty and Ultraman. If you really want to annoy your friends, get one with cheap electronic music for their children. Even though these plastic lanterns are very popular now but it’s definitely cannot be counted as traditional, not for my generation anyway.
Mid-Autumn lanterns are not as colorful as those of the Lantern Festival. There is no big lantern party during Mid-Autumn Festival, but children like making colorful lanterns very much. They make lanterns of different shapes and let them float on the rivers. They don’t leave the riverside until the light of the lanterns disappears. Sometimes, they make Kongming (Hung Ming) lanterns, which can fly because the burning candles heat the air in the lantern. The lantern rises with the heated air.
Happy Chinese Moon Festival Day!
