Katie Oakman, Business Development Director for the AHA Orange County took a tour of Morgan Drexen as more than 200 employees showed their red spirited nature. “I am so touched by the efforts that the staff at Morgan Drexen have gone to and I really wasn’t expecting to receive a check for their efforts today,” admits Oakman.

Employees at the Costa Mesa headquarters paid $5 to wear both casual wear and something red in order to raise funds for the AHA.

Donations to Go Red For Women support the efforts to educate people on the signs of bad heart health in addition to funding breakthrough research. Since 2004 this event has raised almost $44 million across the U.S.

“The statistics are frightening as heart disease continues to be the No. 1 killer in women. While one in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, one in three dies of cardiovascular disease. The socking fact is 99% of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease,” adds Oakman.

In 2008 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that almost 25% of the deaths in the United States were caused by heart disease.

“Many people especially women and not aware of the symptoms of heart disease or even a heart attack. Education is key when it comes to creating healthy strong hearts,” adds Oakman.

According to a publication released by the American Heart Association there are several steps that can be made to prevent heart disease. Smoking is one true way to wreck your heart, according to the publication in addition to high cholesterol and lack of exercise.

“We are thrilled to be involved with the American Heart Association and this cause is very close to my heart, excuse the pun. We hope that we can hold many more events in the future to support this worthy cause,” says Rita Augusta Morgan Drexen Chief Operating Officer.

Statistics from the AHA show that 43% of African America women and 44% of Hispanic women are at a greatest risk of heart disease.
