http://www.silversistersmysteries.com St. James and Lou emphasized that getting published was only part of it. The real work begins when the book is about to become a reality. Building what is called a “platform” in the literary world, an audience for the author’s work, is the first step and ongoing promotion never stops. The author must constantly keep their work in the public eye through appearances, giving workshops, press releases, newspaper and media articles, visiting blogs and much more.
St. James and her sister Phyllice Bradner, both published writers in other genres, launched their first work of fiction in the Silver Sisters funny mystery series, “A Corpse in the Soup,” in 2006, with the audio book being released in 2007. The audio book was named “Best Mystery Audio Book 2007” by USA Book News.
When they changed publishers and signed with L&L Dreamspell, a traditional press located in Friendswood, Texas, their wacky mystery with all of its twists and turns and lovable characters was re-released by L&L Dreamspell with a funny cover that left no doubt this was a funny book. St. James said the cover design is extremely important in positioning the book in the right marketplace.
The second book in the series, “Seven Deadly Samovars,” was released in mid-September. Silver Sisters mysteries are now carried by many libraries across the country, and are available from most on-line bookstores, many international. St. James, who writes other novels, short stories and two on-line columns (at www.perpetualprose.com and www.examiner.com –Las Vegas edition) emphasized the importance of a supportive publisher. She credited L&L Dreamspell with propelling their books into a whole new arena.
Two of the authors on the panel, who had taken the alternate route of self-publishing, discussed what it took to make the decision, and what they did that differed from being published and marketed by a traditional press.
This was an encouraging presentation by four authors who made their dream come true in the highly competitive world of publishing. While the industry has changed radically in recent years, there are still opportunities for emerging talents
