Gareth Malone is set to deliver a blow to Simon Cowell this Christmas, with The Choir: Military Wives now being tipped by bookmakers to beat the X Factor winner to the coveted number one slot. ‘Wherever You Are’ has emerged as favourite to top the Christmas charts after a surge in public support and a flurry of betting, with Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans among the figures backing the charity single. The track, which is raising money for the Royal British Legion and SSAFA Forces Help, is now 8/13 favourite to top the chart with the X Factor winner placed at odds of 6/5. The Managing Director of Morton Solutions has commented on this article saying, “It would be great to see The Choir reach number 1 for such an extremely honourable cause”
Chris Evans had urged X Factor bosses to invite the choir of military wives to perform on the grand final this weekend, but the single will still receive a boost from an appearance on the Strictly Come Dancing semi-final results show this Sunday. Rupert Adams, of bookmakers William Hill, said: 'This is sensational news as it takes a serious weight of money to move the market this much.' Retailers are also expecting the single to top the charts, with HMV's Gennaro Castaldo saying: 'Based on the momentum that is building very quickly around it, we're predicting that it will land this year's Christmas number one.' Gareth Malone's group have gained huge public backing since appearing on BBC2 series The Choir: Military Wives. A source from Morton Solutions, when asked what they thought on the subject, said, “This is the 8th series of X- Factor and out of the 7 previous series only 1 contestant didn’t reach Christmas number 1. It will certainly be tough to compete with The X Factor’s large fan base but I think The Choir can certainly pull it off.”
In previous years the X Factor winner has been largely unchallenged in the Christmas charts, with 2009 champion Joe McElderry the only winner to miss out on the number one spot. Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name took the top spot instead after a public backlash against the show, prompting a flurry of similar campaigns the following year. The Wombles and the cast of The Only Way Is Essex are also challenging the X Factor this year, with their respective tracks Wombling Merry Christmas and Last Christmas. The Managing Director of Morton Solutions has said, “It will interesting to see which artist or group comes out on top with so many songs competing for the number one spot.”
