"Like many metro Detroiters, my mother had lost her job with an automotive supplier as a sewer. With her needing to find work and me wanting to fill a void in my life, the idea of starting a small Internet company came about," explains the New Baltimore resident. So with her mother's "impeccable sewing skills" and her knowledge of business development, coupled with a love for crafting, Ragamuffins Direct was born in 2009.

The company offers unique handmade accessories for women and children. Items sold in the online shop include bibs, burping cloths, chenille baby booties, baby blankets, nursing covers, head scarves for babies and women, crossbody hobo bags and customized gift baskets. Prices range from $5 for a poppy flower bobby pin to $39 for a bag. Special order gift baskets are available for $60 each. Their line of adorable crochet beanie hats are all priced at $20 each.

Schatzberg and her mother do craft shows all across the state where the beanies rate as the biggest selling item in their booth.

By the end of the year, the mother-daughter business partners hope to have their products in 20 different boutiques across the country.

Schatzberg says, "We get calls at least once a month from someone asking if we can wholesale our products." "We dream of one opening our own store front!"
