MOTIF Contributes Modern Furniture to Austin’s Contemporary Interpretation of a Traditional Pastorela

Austin tx, Texas, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) December 3, 2011 -- This weekend, the Austin Latino Theater Alliance (ALTA) debuted “Natividad: A Homemade Pastorela.” For 2011, the traditional Christmas play was updated with a new script by Miguel Angel Santana, contemporary costumes and modern furniture from MOTIF Modern Living® .

Pastorelas, or Shepherds Plays, originated in medieval Europe as religious dramas and were later brought to the New World by Spanish missionaries. La Pastorela recreates the journey of shepherds on their way to the Nativity in Bethlehem.

“Natividad” takes place in the home of a well-to-do Mexican American family on Christmas Eve. In ALTA’s production, the shepherds, angels, devils are allegorical. For example, Lucifer Is represented by Tía Lucy, who wears a red dress and finds herself bathed in red light when her actions are especially devious.

“Natividad: A Homemade Pastorela” is skillfully directed by Alejandro Pedemonte and features a talented, bilingual cast: Chuy Velasquez, Daniela Ruiz, Karina Dominguez, Diego Molina, Karla Longnion, Rodrigo Lloreda, Tina Rodriguez, Trini Martinez, Diana Saucedo, Lupita Garcia Marsh, Diego Villareal, Patricio Olivares & Liam Montero. Claudia Chavez is the stage manager.

The play is presented at the Emma Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC). Shows are at 8:00 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, December 1-17.
