The service features one of the great bassists of our time, Earth, Wind and Fire's Verdine White, performing two of Ravel's compositions, "Sunny Side Up" which rose to #1 in America and the debut performance of "Blissin'" with the Hour of Power Orchestra.
Freddie Ravel's career and passion for applying music to life spans 30 yearsacross six continents with a career producing, recording, performing and composing with Earth, Wind & Fire, Al Jarreau, Madonna, Prince, Quincy Jones, the Boston Pops.Most recently, he completed a worldwide tour with music legend, Carlos Santana. As Earth, Wind & Fire's bassist since the band's inception, Verdine White has won six GrammyÂ® Awards, has been GrammyÂ®-nominated 17 times and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
Earth, Wind and Fire has earned more than 50 gold and platinum albums, selling over 90 million albums worldwide.
In 2007, Mr. White was inducted into the Boys and Girls Club's Alumni Hall of Fame. He is co-founder of the Verdine White Foundation which provides musical education to underprivileged and gifted students. In 2008, Mr. White was presented
with Bass Player magazine's Lifetime Achievement Award.
Led by Maestro Armand Diangienda, a 16-member String Ensemble from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste (OSK) String Ensemble will debut its historic U.S. appearance by performing Air "On the G String" from J.S. Bach's Orchestral Suite #3 In D, (BWV 1068)
Most notable about the OSK's story is their nearly 20-year journey to create a 200-person, self-taught symphony orchestra and choir in a country ravaged by decades of war, poverty, violence and political corruption. The group's self-reliance, dedication and faith throughout all of those challenges have inspired people the world over.OSK String Ensemble is in southern California this week to promote its summer 2013 tour.
The OSK String Ensemble will perform with its 200-member full symphony in June at the Los Angeles Grand Park, University of California Los Angeles and a red carpet gala at Walt Disney Concert Hall on June 25. OSK is supported and endorsed by such music luminaries as Quincy Jones, Wynton Marsalis, and Lionel Richie.
