Moving to Saudi Arabia is not like any other international move, the relatively strict and proper documents formalities have often been found to be difficult to follow; luckily, Move One is an expert on the matter and we are here to help.


Saudis take their religion very seriously. The country is governed by Sharia law, and Islam is closely interwoven with daily life. It is essential that the expat first becomes familiar with Islamic customs and laws when preparing to move to the Kingdom to avoid transgression and the consequences thereof.

When moving to Saudi Arabia there are some things you should be aware of. Besides having all your proper paperwork ready, which can be a hassle in itself, there are a lot of prohibited items that could cause trouble if you try to bring them into the country. Here is a list of items that are not allowed inside the Kingdom.

Prohibited Items

* Gambling Games (including your favorite childhood Monopoly, etc.)
* Animal Skins
* Stuffed Animals (not toys)
* Military Uniforms
* Firearms
* Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco Products
* Radio Transmitter
* Pornographic Material
* Any food containing alcohol or pork
* Any books pertaining to religion other then Islam

These are just some general items that are usually confiscated when entering Saudi Arabia. When importing such things as antiques, furniture, paintings and musical instruments, proper documentation, declaring these items must be made out prior to entering the country. If you would like to bring along your family pet when relocating to Saudi, a valid vaccination card, health certificate of the pet, import certificate and a copy of the owners passport must be presented to custom officials. Vehicles can be imported to Saudi Arabia as long as they are not more than five years old. Customs duty on all vehicles is applicable and it is five percent of its value.

Documents needed for import customs clearance are as follows:

* Car registration
* Saudi Arabia Standard Organization (SASO)
* Proof of ownership
* Police clearance

Used personal effects belonging to expatriates arriving for the first time to reside in the country are exempted from customs duties provided that they are of the personal nature.

Documents required for import customs clearance are as follows:

* Copy of shipping document

* Descriptive inventory / Packing list
* Itemized valued inventory
* Certificate of insurance (if applicable)
* Authorization letters attested by the Saudi Chamber of Commerce (formats to be provided to the consignee upon arrival at destination)
* Copy of consignee’s passport with the entry visa page
* Copies of residence permit (Igama)
* Purchase receipts / invoices for electrical appliances
