Prepare

1. Get rid of your junk!

Start by getting rid of those things you don't want to move or don't need. Why move your junk from place to place? Have a garage sale and make some extra money now!

2. Pack early!

Don't wait until the last minute to pack. There is always going to be more to pack than you originally expected and you're much more likely to be organized if you are not throwing things in boxes at the last minute!

3. Purchase enough boxes, tape and packing materials.

You'd be surprised how quickly those boxes fill up. Be sure to purchase more boxes then you think you will need. You will use them. Stores such as Home Depot sell small moving boxes starting at 49 cents so they are affordable.

Packing Tips

1. Label your boxes with contents and what room in the new location they should be placed so that you know!

2. Keep boxes for the same room together.

3. Secure the bottom of every box properly with heavy duty tape. 6.

4. Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothing. Move your clothing from your old closet to your new one without rehanging! This is a professional mover trick that saves so much time!

5. Save your back! Pack heavy items such as books or magazines in smaller boxes.

6. Pack dishes and glassware in newspaper in small or medium boxes.

7. Electronic equipment should be unplugged and wrapped. Label the cables before disconnecting so that you can reconnect them!

On moving day

1. Have all of your boxes lined up and ready to go, ready for your helpers or professional movers!

2. If you are using a professional moving company, the more organized you are, the faster they can move you. Since most moving companies charge by the hour, this will save you money!
