Mullaperiyar imbroglio should be viewed in human dimension and not in xeric considerations. It should be viewed as a human problem, as much a problem where Tamilnadu is opposing Kundankulam nuclear power plant when a top-most scientist of Tamilnadu origin Bharat ratna Abdul Kalamhas given a clean chit to the power house on safety safeguards dispelling the fears of the people of the area as well as Tamilnadu. But when the state government and the politicians perceive the stability of Mullaperiyar why do they imagine fears on the hazards of the nuclear power plant? You cannot have two views on the impending dangers and fears when circumstances warrant circumstantial conclusions.
There have been tremours. There is a thickly populated housing in the vicinity and peripherals of the dam. The water level is said to have caused seepages, cracks in a masonry structure which is more than a hundred year old. Tamilnadu cannot claim riparian right, as the water is physically altered to flow into the territory of Tamilnadu through a tunnel. In case of danger, if catastrophe has to be avoided, the water has to be diverted to the Arabian Sea which is further west of Tamilnadu. Kerala has to spent Crores of rupees on safeguards and undertake disaster management measures on a war footing. Tamilnadu’s only argument is on an agreement signed between the two states for consideration of a paltry sum for releasing water. It is just a contract and not a riparian right. If people of Tamilnadu have fears, it is the duty of the Government of Tamilnadu to act in their interest. If people of Keralahave fears, it is for the Govt of Kerala to take such steps to convince the people about disaster prohibition steps. Both the states have to respect the sentiments of the people and assuage their genuine fears.
Demagogue and gift of the gab to escalate people’s passions on the opposite side of the danger zone will cause irreparable damage to the trust and feelings of people of neighbourly states. Politicians, unfortunately in the Indian context today, cannot rise to the stature of Statesman.
