A multiple vehicle accident on US-95 near Sagle, Idaho in Bonner Country left one person dead while another was airlifted to the hospital.
Around 9 a.m. Zach Henager was driving southbound on Highway 95 when he lost control of his car and swerved into oncoming traffic.
"This is one of the more severe semi-tractor crashes that I've seen," Schenck said. "The damage to both tractors is very severe."
Roger House was on his way to go ice fishing when he was forced to suddenly swerve in order to miss the crash.
"All I seen is that white car spinning around in the road and it spun right in front of the red semi that was headed north," said House. "He t-boned him and as soon as he hit him he veered across the other lane and hit the other semi head on."
Lt. Schenck said one of the semi truck drivers died at the scene. Henager was airlifted to Kootenai Medical Center where he is in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
Highway 95 was shutdown in both directions for several hours as ISP took measurements and photographs of the crash scene.
"We have our crash reconstructive team out here right now and piece everything together and log all the evidence in so they will be able to go back to the office and determine exactly what happened," said Lt. Schenck.
It's still unclear what caused Henager to lose control. The edge of the road was covered with snow and ice, but other drivers and witnesses said the road was not slick at the time of the crash. Even with the temperatures warming up, Lt. Schenck said drivers still need to be cautious.
"You still have to drive according to the conditions," he said. "With a little bit of water standing on the road, if your tires aren't the best, you could hydroplane very easily. We just want people to drive according to the conditions."
US 95 reopened to traffic.
