Mumbai Marathon 2012 goes Green this Sunday

The Mumbai Marathon is an international road running competition held every year in Mumbai during the month of January. Such a marathon was conducted initially in the year 2004 and is conducted regularly from then on. The ninth edition of this event is going to be conducted this Sunday in Mumbai. This time, the route to be made up for the marathon has been tweaked for the runners and the timing has been advanced by 15 minutes so that it would be easy for the home runners to reach the destination within the target timing. This marathon has been awarded the national status by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

Another information regarding the Mumbai marathon is the green initiative taken by the organizers during the Marathon. The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) will go green and an organization has been roped in to help adopt environment-friendly techniques. The green initiative is taken up by NextGen which operates from the India Institute of Management Bangalore. They have been working with the organizers of marathons conducted in India for the past two years. Last year, they had calculated the amount of carbon emission due to marathon conducted in Bangalore and planted around 300 plants along that route to compensate the carbon emission.
