A Muslim author whose first novel includes a courtroom trial of God for crimes against humanity will speak at the Unitarian Universalists of Fallston in Fallston, Maryland from 11am to noon on October 24, 2010.
Mohamed Mughal’s talk, titled “The Good Guys vs. the Bad Guys,” includes readings from the Quran and explores scripture and other literary sources to sample cultural notions of who’s “good” and who’s “bad.” The author provides examples of typical characterizations of “bad guys” using current headlines, the writings of Martin Luther, quotes from Idi Amin, and passages from George Orwell’s novel, 1984.
In his Theory of Special Relativity, Albert Einstein concluded that there are no privileged frames of reference. Mughal’s discussion extrapolates this concept into a model of moral relativism that suggests that there are no intrinsically good or bad guys and that the designation is largely one of relative perspective. Mughal cites the villain-less writings of Kurt Vonnegut as an example of circumstances without bad guys.
Asked about his upcoming talk, Mughal replied, “Before we burn the Quran or denounce President Obama for having a Muslim father, let’s take a tiny moment to learn what’s in the Quran and what it means to be a Muslim.”
The author maintains a blog at http://www.mohamedmughal.blogspot.com. Learn more about the Unitarian Universalists of Fallston at http://www.uufallston.org.
