Former sexual abuse victim launches memoir and is featured in the 2012 Minnesota State
Arts Board 8th Annual Art of Recovery exhibit to bring continued awareness to victim’s rights.
Minneapolis, MN – February 23, 2012 – De’Vonna Pittman, author of “My Pretty and its Ugly Truth will celebrate the arrival of her published memoir on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Edinburgh USA located at 8700 Edinbrook Crossing, Brooklyn Park, MN from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
My Pretty and its Ugly Truth shares De’Vonna’s account of growing up and enduring years of sexual abuse while living in poverty.
About the Author
De’Vonna Pittman is committed to providing leadership and training to end the sexual exploitation of young girls. De’Vonna grew up in a housing project in Ford Heights, IL, the poorest suburb in America, where she lived with her mother and six siblings. She was sexually abused at a very young age, and ran away at sixteen years old. She was a high school drop out and a teen mom by the age of eighteen and mother of two by the time she was twenty years old.
De’Vonna relocated to the Twin Cities to escape poverty and to create a stable and healthy life for her two daughters. She is now married and both of her daughters attend Grambling State University in Louisiana. In addition to earning a Liberal Arts degree from Minneapolis Community and Technical College, she is currently a student at Metro State University, and will graduate in the spring of 2012 with a Bachelors Degree in Human Services with a focus on Youth Corrections. Despite balancing her roles of wife, mother, volunteer, and full time employee with Hennepin County, she recently joined the Board of Directors at the Sexual Violence Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Her platform is aimed at building self-esteem for girls and boys by speaking out against sexual abuse and sexual violence. “My Pretty and its Ugly Truth” is inspiring, deliberate, and raw. It offers the reader hope and lessons for survival and success. The book parallels the alarming statistics that 70% of babies born out of wedlock stem from young girls who were sexually abused.
You don't want to miss this event! The sharing of how to write a memoir, discussion of “literary vices”, and protecting one’s voice will be provided at the pre-book launch celebration. A true story of the unfolding life experiences of one woman and her struggle to love herself after enduring years of sexual abuse is a treat for some, provides lessons for others and offers hope to all.
The book launch celebration is free with $20 book purchase and includes: Social Hour, Appetizers, and a “Purple Carpet Affair”.
